Ana Mendieta turned a refugee in the age of 12, fleeing the routine change in her indigenous Cuba for Dubuque, Iowa. This sense of displacement and loss would afterwards be noticeable in Mendieta’s unbelievable artworks. Nearly all of her 200 artworks utilize the earth as their medium — drawing on native forms of information, spiritualism, and
